These Model CRI projects were completed in the early 1990s. CRI was invited by the Australian Language and Literacy Council to publish these examples of leading work in the field. We followed this up with a workshop Beyond Plain English. That was in 1996, over twenty years ago. At the time we thought this was good work, but ‘best practice plain language’ is not a term we would use. We do so here because this was the title chosen by the publisher.
Today it remains the case that most work in Plain Language rarely sets or achieves standard for gaining attention and standards for engaging people. Testing is still in its infancy as a routine practice as are some other aspects of these projects.
